2 May 2008 - ** SS Boyne Castle Found and Dived ** Shane, Ross, Stevie, Warren.
Before.....
After......
(still to be polished)
Dived a New Wreck today with Marine Quest out of Eyemouth, we thought it was fairly local so arrived at 2pm to be told it was 20miles off shore...so after a long bumpy run out we arrived onsite and jumped in, Stunning visibility of 15-20m and Ambient Light at 50+m....after a bit of a cock-up in which Warren and I got seperated I joined Shane Wasik and Ross Coventry for a Dive around the Wreck, it was 47m to the highest point and 53m in the Scour, looked like a Trawler of some kind, Great Dive with Shoals of Fish, white Sandy Seabed covered in Big Scallops, and Lobsters like Dogs, biggest I have ever seen...not to mention Portholes and Brass everywhere, swimming towards the Bow we came across the Bell, after a joint effort we bagged it and sent it up. Lots more to see on this wreck and could be done by suitably qualified and experienced Divers on Air.
After another poke among plates, Jars and Bottles -still to find the Binnacle and Telegraph, it was time to go...after a cold 35min Decompression we surfaced into the Sun and were picked up, Seems another 3 Divers including Warren had tried to send up the Bell but it didnt arrive, so we found it...oh well Finders Keepers!...
.
We thought the Wreck was probably the 'Cradock' a Fishing Trawler Bombed by German Aircraft in 1941, after a quick clean tonight it says on the Bell, 'Boyne Castle 1909', This was a small Steamship which in early 1917 was stopped and captured by UB22 a German U-boat, whch took the Captain and 1st Mate Prisoner, set the Crew adrift in a Lifeboat and sunk her with the Deck Gun, this Submarine also torpedoed the 'Shakespeare', which lies quite close by, on the same day, and whch was first dived last year by MarineQuest and the Bell recovered.
Will try and get this bell cleaned and polished then decide what we will do with it after reporting it to the Receiver of Wrecks....Maybe it will go on display in The Cafe at MarineQuest Eyemouth....ill ask the co-owners...
Good Effort Shane Wasik - Heriot Watt/SQSAC, Ross Coventry - Heriot Watt/SQSAC, Stevie Adams - SQSAC, Warren Izzett - SQSAC
Picture to follow when it is cleaned up....![]()
*** Stop Press....we will be Diving what we now think is the 'Cradock' in early June there is another wreck which lies close to the 'Boyne Castle' maybe another Bell??
