SQSAC SUMMER BARBEQUE 09-AUGUST 2008 YELLOWCRAIGS
Lindsay is organising a Summer Barbeque at Yellowcraigs on the 9th August, The plan is to Dive HMS Ludlow which lies in 6metres of water 100 metres off the Beach, and then have a Barbeque on the Beach, so lets hope for decent weather. Friends, and Family will be very welcome.
Lindsay will be looking for some volunteers to assist in the Planning of this event, so dont be shy if you can help get in touch with the DO or Lindsay.
Yellowcraigs Beach is a lovely site, lots of sand and Dunes, 4 miles from North Berwick and just outside the little Village of Dirleton, superb views looking on to Fidra Island, the inspiration for 'Treasure Island' by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Ludlow in the Forth 1944
More importantly the site of the wreck of HMS Ludlow, ex USS Stockton an American Destroyer which was 'given' to the Royal Navy in 1940 as part of the Lend Lease Scheme. It was finally sunk after being used as a Rocket target in 1946. It Lies about 100m(depending on the tide) from the shore in 6-7m of water, she is well broken up but there are some really substantial remains sticking out of the sand 4-5m high.

Part of the Bridge structure that reaches the surface covered in life
As this is a flat Sandy Seabed the wreckage has become a really interesting Reef with lots of life and shoals of fish, as it is so shallow you can easily spend an hour in the water exploring.
There are still some large bits to find, and we may organise a search on the day to try and map it.
...Downside it is a long hike with kit...but we may have a cunning plan....
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE
Just a reminder of the plans to have a day at Yellow Craig beach on Saturday 9th August.
Unfortunately the barbeque facilities on the beach have already been booked out but I have checked with East Lothian Council and they are happy for us to bring our own barbeques on to the beach as long as we clear up afterwards so feel free to take along a disposable BBQ.
There are plans to do a dive on the Ludlow, more details on the dive to follow….
Please bring your own drinks and picnic/BBQ food along.
Family and friends are welcome!
Cheers
Lindsay
