31 Mar 2007 - U714 - EYEMOUTH MYSTERY U-BOAT
Picture found of U714 entering Harbour after a Patrol around 1944.
This is thought to be the U-Boat found last year off Eyemouth.
U714 was a Type VIIC U-Boat built and commissioned in 1943.
She was found and sunk after torpedoing the SS MAGNE off St Abb's head on the 14th of March 1945 by the Frigate HMAS Natal who detected her on ASDIC while assisting to rescue survivors of the MAGNE. She fired 2 sets of depth charges from a SQUID Launcher, a new invention linked to the ASDIC which electronically directed the launchers to fire on the target -it was a deadly weapon, after the second set of explosions, debris and oil were seen, and contact lost, so it was assumed she was sunk. A Hunter Killer group came up from the Tyne and plastered the seabed with depth charges bringing up more wreckage.
She as assumed to have been destroyed in this attack, there were no survivors from her crew of 50.
Divers have searched for her for years without luck, and in 2006 she was found off Eyemouth some distance from her reported position. She is in very good condition and is intact on her Starboatd side in approx 60m, work is ongoing to tell her and her crews story and to try and protect her as a War Grave.
